Your Guide to Seed
Cool-Season Grasses
The most common turf species found in cool-season climates are tall fescue, perennial ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass and fine fescues. Each species contains their own unique characteristics.
Tall Fescue is a dark green grass with a deep root system that is most drought tolerant. Because of its heat and drought tolerance, tall fescues can be successfully maintained through the transition zone and higher elevations of southern climates.
Perennial Ryegrass is a well-suited grass in the northern climates as a permanent grass, and utilized in the south for winter overseeding of bermudagrass. It grows best in the full sun and typically can be mowed as close as 1/2.” It’s fine leaf texture and medium to dark green color make perennial ryegrass a strong suited option for high maintenance areas.
Kentucky bluegrass is a fine-bladed grass with the strongest traffic tolerance and recovery ability. Kentucky bluegrass is often added into mixtures to build density and improve aesthetics.
Fine fescues are very versatile and the most shade tolerant of cool-season turf grasses. Fine fescues are commonly found in shade mixtures but also exhibit great drought tolerance.
Warm-Season Grasses
Bermudagrass is a viable option to be planted in the spring and fall seasons in the southern climate and transition zone. Bermudagrass exhibits strong heat and drought tolerance, traffic tolerance and can be mowed as close as a half-inch.
